Honorable Marian McClellan – Brief Bio
Marian McClellan has been Mayor of Oak Park Michigan for seven years and she has been a community activist for longer still. She graduated from Mumford High School with Deirdre Waterman, earned a BA from Wayne State University and an MA from Oakland University. She was a public school teacher for thirty-two years and served as a Michigan Education Association building representative. Marian proudly served as an Executive Board Member for Sandy Levin's campaign, and was chair of the Oak Park Huntington Woods Democratic Club. As Mayor of Oak Park, she has been an active member of the Eight Mile Boulevard Association, South Oakland County Mayors Association, SEMCOG, MML, Women Officials Network Foundation, NAACP and the 14th Congressional District Executive Committee.
She is the mother of Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner and defense attorney Michelle McIver, and proud grandmother of Jessie, Vander, Asher and Levi.
Mayor McClellan and her staff played a pivotal role in the re-vitalization of the City of Oak Park, saving millions of dollars by improving inefficiencies and re-negotiating contracts and bonds. She added an economic development department, and brought in $100million of new development including FedEx, the Jefferson Oaks development, a total re-do of the huge apartment complex now known as The LOOP on Greenfield, Planet Fitness, and a new use for the historic art deco WWJ building as a Curt Catello restaurant. After the new city hall was built, she added social media and other new ways to communicate with the community. Under her leadership, residents passed a proposition ending Oak Park's status as a dry city, so now folks can order a beer with their burger or a Tom Collins with their schwarma.
During the summer, residents and neighbors were delighted to see Oak Park blooming with sunflowers, a cheerful symbol of the new hope and vitality they see in their city.
