Honorable Deborah L. Macon – Bio
Deb Macon is a professional facilitator, trainer, board governance consultant, coach, and parliamentarian. She has worked for the Michigan Association of School Boards for over 20 years supporting School Board Members as they serve their communities.
Deb was elected to two terms on the Bloomfield Hills Board of Education, serving as Treasurer for several years and also Vice President and Secretary. She served 12 years as a Trustee in W. Bloomfield Township and is now in her 16th year as an appointed official on the Greater W. Bloomfield Cable Communications Commission. She served on the Michigan Community Service Commission during both the Engler and Granholm Administrations. Deb is an alumna of MSU’s Michigan Political Leadership Program. She earned a BA in Elementary Education from Harris Teachers College in St. Louis, MO and holds a Lifetime Teaching Certificate from the State of Missouri. She earned an MBA from Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Management’s Division of Professional Accounting and passed the CPA Exam in Michigan over 30 years ago. |
She taught graduate and undergraduate level classes at three institutions, (1) Wayne State University’s Nonprofit Sector Studies Program, (2) the U of M Dearborn’s Institute for Local Government and Michigan Township Association’s Leadership Program, and (3) the Trustee Leadership Development in Indianapolis, a national nonprofit consulting firm dedicated to advancing principled leadership of individuals and organizations.
Deb is a long-time member of the League of Women Voters and served four years on the League’s National Board of Directors. She served as Secretary of the Board of Directors of United Way for Southeastern Michigan for 10 years and is now Chair of the Board’s Volunteer Engagement Committee. She is a long-time Red Cross volunteer and former Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross Blood Services Region in Detroit.
Deb is one of the founding members of both the Women Officials Network (1997) and the Women Officials Network Foundation (2008). She served as the WON Foundation’s first President and first Administrator. She passionately works to support positive and forward moving community building initiatives, especially those that empower women and girls to reach their full potential.
She is also the founding President of the Greater West Bloomfield Community Coalition for Youth. Deb is a founding member of the Race Relations and Diversity Task Force serving southeastern Michigan and designed its signature recognition program, The Diversity Champion Honor Roll.
Additionally, Deb works as a Coach and Leader, supporting adults and youth seeking healthy lifestyles and positive behavior change.

- In 2019 Deb was named Volunteer of the Year by United Way for Southeastern Michigan.
- On National Philanthropy Day, November 10, 2016, Deb was presented the prestigious George W. Romney Award for Lifetime Achievement in Volunteerism by the Detroit Chapter of the Association of Professional Fundraisers, nominated by United Way for Southeastern Michigan.
- In 2015, Deb and her husband, Ken, received the Greater W. Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce Community Excellence Award for Spirit of the Community.
- Deb received the highest awards for volunteer service presented in 1990 by both the Bloomfield Hills School District and the Greater West Bloomfield Michigan Week Committee.
