It is with great sorrow that we note the passing of longtime WON member, Hon. Andrea Schroeder. Andrea was the State Representative for the 43rd District which covers Clarkston, Clintonville and Waterford Township and was the majority whip for the House Republican Caucus. A former WON board member, Andrea was a recent speaker at our January 2021 Networking Breakfast sharing her wisdom and experience on how to work collaboratively to pass legislation to serve the people of Michigan. Andrea was joined by two other strong women leaders on a panel of speakers at this breakfast. One of those, Anne Mervenne, shared this thought upon hearing of Andrea’s passing yesterday (10-01-21), “Andrea had an exuberant joy for life which was a gift to me and all who knew her. Her resilience was a testament to the love she had for her family and for life. I will never forget her.” The other speaker, fellow State Representative, Mari Manoogian, added her own remembrance of Andrea, saying “Rep. Schroeder, whom I affectionately called ‘Auntie Andrea,’ was a true gem of a friend. She was not only someone I learned from as a young legislator—she served in a variety of capacities before she was elected to the statehouse—she was incredibly hilarious and had a great sense of humor. She was a fighter—I miss Auntie Andrea already. “ Andrea was a dear friend, a colleague, and a strong advocate for seeing more women in leadership roles in the public sector. She led by example. We will miss Andrea Schroeder and continue to be motivated by her example. We are deeply saddened by her passing and our hearts go out to her family, friends and colleagues. Students Campaign to Make Monarch Butterfly the State Insect
November 14, 2019
This article, written by Andy Kozlowski, appeared in the West Bloomfield Beacon
WEST BLOOMFIELD — About 125 second grade students at a local elementary school are on a quest to make the monarch butterfly the official state insect.
The students attend Gretchko Elementary School, located at 5300 Greer Road in West Bloomfield Township, part of the West Bloomfield School District. In recent months they’ve been writing letters to Michigan lawmakers, believing that the monarch butterfly’s survival could benefit from the boost in awareness that would come with being Michigan’s official state insect. Currently, Michigan is one of only two states that does not have its own state insect. |
In response, state Sen. Rosemary Bayer and state Rep. Brenda Carter are currently sponsoring two bills, Senate Bill 581 and House Bill 4467, which would give the monarch butterfly this special classification, joining six other states that, like Michigan, are on the monarch’s migration path. The two lawmakers visited the students at Gretchko Elementary on Nov. 1 to discuss with them what happens next in the legislative process. They also collected additional letters from the students to be delivered to lawmakers who are still on the fence on the issue, and the students even performed a song about the butterfly.

Oakland County Honors Women’s Right to Vote
June 14, 2019
This article appeared in the Oakland County Times, written by Crystal Proxmire
Pontiac, MI- Delia Bixby Leddick would wait until her grandchildren got home from school on election days so she could take them with her to the polls to watch. These memories came to County Commissioner Gwen Markham of Novi’s mind when she was invited to be among the speakers at a celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States.
Markham’s grandmother was born in 1891. In 1911 she and other young women in the graduating class of St. John’s wrote about a topic of debate at the time – why women should be allowed to vote. She was 28 years old before she was able to cast her first ballot. She never forgot how important that right was, and she never let her family forget either. The Friday morning anniversary ceremony was held on the lawn of the County Commission building, with a giant gold, white, and purple flag draped down the building’s facade. Four Stories of Service from the 2018 WONder Woman Awards
September 27, 2018
(Crystal A. Proxmire, writing for the OAKLAND COUNTY TIMES)
Troy, MI- The first column Rochelle Riley ever wrote was for the Courier-Journal newspaper in Louisville, KY. In it she called out city leaders for failing to honor hometown icon Muhammad Ali by letting his boyhood home deteriorate and not having a museum in his honor. The next day the mayor’s office called the publication, and the next headline touted a promise that an appropriate honor would happen. Sure enough, the column sparked a campaign for an $80 million development that included a museum and bared the famous boxer’s name.
“The first column that I wrote when I came to Detroit called for the schools to be shut down and reopened under new management,” Riley said. “18 years later I’m still writing the same column.” She noted the poor literacy rates of students and the importance of good education, topics she has passionately advocated for in her work.
Her talent for writing that, as she said, “riles people up,” as well as her commitment to uplifting others are what earned Riley one of four WONder Woman Awards at the Women Official’s Network annual dinner Thursday night. ..
